Scofield Honored as 'Insurance Legend'
LAS VEGAS - Oscar "Ozzie" Scofield, widely known as a leading member of the life reinsurance industry, was honored March 4, 2007 by the Actuarial Foundation at their inaugural ReFocus Conference and Insurance Legends' Golf Classic Tournament.
The Foundation, charged with promoting the education and research of the actuarial community by "harnessing the talents of actuaries," teamed with the ACLI, SOA and the Reinsurance Section of the SOA to create and sponsor the event. Recognizing the importance of developing industry leaders, the Foundation selected five individuals who have positively impacted the insurance community and society in general as the initial Legend inductees.
With over 40 years of distinguished experience in the industry, and his continued involvement with academia, Ozzie was a natural choice for the honor of 'Insurance Legend'. His humble beginnings sweeping the floors of Lutheran Mutual Life led his career to a number of companies, where he served in roles including President, Monogram Reassurance; President, Chief Executive Officer and Director, General Re; Vice President - Sales, Transamerica Re; and Chairman and CEO, Scottish Re.
Now retired, his expertise is sought by many: he is a member of the Board of Regents of Wartburg College, his alma mater; he continues to promote the insurance profession by mentoring Risk Management and Insurance students at Appalachian State University; and, his passion for motorcycles has earned him a place on the Board of Directors of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation, the directing body of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
What's left to be added to his list of accomplishments? A three-week cross-country tour of the United States - by motorcycle.
Other Legends honored for personal and professional achievement include Stanley B. Tulin, AXA Financial, Arthur F. Ryan, Prudential Financial, Peter W. Mullin, MullinTBG, and Ronald V. Dolan, First Colony Life Ins. Co.
